A line you say?

This brief slightly got to me and upset me because a line...

__________________________________________

there you go...
haha
well yeah it's not been my favorite one recently because
i had no idea were to begin:

Dont know why i said amber and was speaking like i was slow but it comes hand in hand with a hangover...

But after abit of stress i found out were to start and basically i bought a lovely brand spanking new sketchbook and stenciled my urban legend tag on to it, then i cut up all the bottom of the pages to make a little flip book and on each section it answers the question A LINE IS: blah blah blah.

e.g A line is Continuous

A line is people or objects side by side one another (like a que)

Then along the top (above the flipbook section) there are some illustrations i carried out with the piece, here are a few photos of me modeling my sketchbook and whats in it:

The flip book tabs, it's a bit like a game, were you turn the page and guess what a line is

and then the tab to find out the answer and whether you were right or wrong.

In the crit this style of drawing was well praised and in something which i saw as a 20 min sketch i was told it showed emotion, feel, passion etc so i tried to keep my book up to the standard these drawings were at.

This is  the style of drawing still, but i believe that not all the pieces in this style work as well as he last one at hand, i guess it depends on what you'd like to communicate with the colour selection and all it shows.

I enjoyed this section. throughout the book i hadn't used photography and had just started using ink! i think some of the outcomes are really interesting.

I believe that the middle photo of all the lines in ink looks really smart on here and stands out some what. that part was suggesting a line was like lined paper and grids. so i basically mixed secondary and primary research together to mould this piece.

So yeah, those are some pages from my book of the deffenition what is a line.
i believe its a sucessful book, although some pages are weaker than others, that just
shows that i can improve which is good :) challenge

Some of the pages are very strong although, id say that after my crit and this was mentioned that all of my pages after are as strong as the next, some more appealing than others although both works on the next.

Touch Me

Right, basically ive moved on from last time and edited my Light Links book
to a more clear format however a quite complex book.
i wanted it to open as a a5 book follded in half then out further and further etc...

and well after a little lot of stress i think ive got it bagged, as a mock up anyway
the piece kind of looks like a instrament but here are a few photos of it!
(these are the better photos of it now)

Wasting words on lowercases and capitals.

ADD PHOTOGRAPHS OF BOOK MORE DEVELOPMENT. END!

Friday, 23 January 2009

so...

Okay, from were i last left off i was at the stage of explaining my research i had carried out on this project.

During th
is work we were asked to find out what we wanted to make our book about.
wrote a hundred topics i could make a book on.
i will list ten:

- Different types of light used
- Things that work/won't with light
- Different weights of things that are light
- Flavors of light (just a fun way of playing around with different coloured lights)
- Lights through time
- Colour contact sheets
- Reflections
- Improper Contrast
- Natural/ Manmade light
- Statistical measurements of light used in different countries

Now i have 100 choices to go off on possibilities to construct a book on.

I had an idea of what i wanted to experiment with, which was using my book as a bit of a game basically the idea was that we started off with a item sa
y On, and linked it onto something with a relationship with the previous item so:

(e.g. Red -> Fox -> Animal -> Fur -> Coat -> Fashion -> Models -> Beauty -> B
east -> Etc.....)

Yeah, thats the plan any howww so i listed together a hundred items which started with the word on and ende
d up linking to Plane...
i sketched out some layout considerations and items fo
r the piece being used. and how to visually make them appealing, here are a few images of the development of the book
'Light Links'

This is my book however i have circled some areas which are to be changed , one is i want it more image based and some i need to simplify possibly change the layout into a more formal aproach and see how it turns out.

Below are two other books i had a go at, one man made one computer based, same contents.
'100 flavors of light'

Now my crit is in like 3 mins so i can only get one scan of the book
which is this:

Book on light.

I started off my project on light by gathering a wide source of secondary facts and figures on light, this included such things as:

- What is light
- Who uses it
- What types of light there are
- Different elements of light used

Basically doing this i learnt that light is a electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength that is visible to the human eye and that three primary properties of light are

Intensity
Frequency or Wavelength
Polarization

images containing light some of these
images included the following forms:
- Spotlight
- Coloured light
- Light Emitting Diodes
- Bulbs
- Feathers
- Scales
- light colours etc.

After that was carried out i collected a wide amount of images which are secondary of course and gave me a bit more of a direction visually, here are a few i
mages that i collected to link with what i have been collecting qualatitative research on:

and from these i thought it was time to do some quick sketches on pieces of light, primary none the less:

London Bridge.

From this image
, i edited the auto balance so that the image would be really dark
just to experiment
whether the m
ixed media i used for lights in the sketch would stand out, or work..
.

In all i believe that this sketch did work in ways, the light is VERY visible and stands out as light should.

From this sketch i decided to make a lightbulb stencil out of this image
here is the stencil and a few images of after it had been used:

Stencil

After i had completed a series of stencils i decided to make another small stencil but of a light bulb simplified in two shapes. this is the stencil for the piece and 50 of the colours i experimented with:

Stencil

After i had completed these i decided to do a similar thing only this time
rather than bright light i used light weight so feathers, simple pimple smart.

After i sprayed the stencil i scanned in the image and edited it to a contact sheet of different effects:

Now i am afraid it is dinner munch so i am
going to carry on on other areas when i get back in a hour.
over all that is my research i completed briefly and next i will show you the development
of a few of the books i produced. over and out scarlet. x

Book of a hund-read

Where is your posture?

Okay... my title of the book is Light, boring?
yeah sure, try and work without light, no doubt any one of your projects
would not work without it.
what is light? Day time, weight? low calories? hmmm all of them and more sir.

I want to keep this brief really simple and visualy embracing.
the kind of thing that makes you look and go wow? the kind of art in which
makes you involved and want to carry on. like a book should no?

My self, i hate books. i don't read at all, so if i can tackle my own responce in this
then that should be half the job done.

So yeah, ive got a nice little depth of research which includes:

Quantatitative
Qualtatitative
Primary
Secondary research.

These above are shown in reflections of 100.
basically this is were i am, i have tackled the following:

Facts
Questionairres
Statistics
Images
Drawings
Mixed Media
Experimentation
Photographs

I plan to carry out more and a more depth of information before i even touch anything else
as it would be stupid running before i can walk.

so my plan is to tackle the most useless information EVER and use it to my advantage and make you go Woah! but yet i want to keep it simple.

collect, produce. drawings, photographical experimentation of filtered light, products in catalogs
other existing items thumbnails etc. go go go..

so how do i come about this?
i get up off my ass and rent some books and other resorces such as the lovely internet, mmmm.

i will use so much stuff it will get me a high percentage
(mid way through this blog becoming cocky helps my confidence and makes me find a pulse to this brief)
cool. so yeah i want to use anything and everything.
extraspecialy some things i havent used before? could be handy eyy, photoshop, illastrator even paint.

well as we are supose to attract visualy i plan to lay off the notes and all that jazz.
i want the image to say it all, whats wrong, whats right, what should change, reasonable developmentatitative... (if those other words are real this is to now) research.

im going to be critical against how well the message comes across, is it interesting or boring
tacky or smart etc...
yeahh time to start it really sir.

oooooooo 2am nice? x

What is a book?

oh yay

heres some secondary resorces i pulled off the internet.
of quotes of what is a book. after all without research how would
you know where to begin?

"...All that mankind has done, thought, gained or been...is lying as in magic preservation in the pages of books."Thomas Carlye

"While many viewers may not think of books themselves as works of art, the idea that art books contain works of art is not foreign. To take the next step and experience an artist's book as the sum of its part; binding, text and visual imagery is not that difficult."David Edlefsen

"In a book the artist controls the combinations and ordering of different bits of information."David J. Henry

"Paper will stand anything you write on it."Lenin

"In theory, there are no limits upon the kinds of materials that can be put between covers, or how those materials can be arranged." Richard Kostelanetz

"To understand something, is to understand the structure of which it is a part and/or the elements forming the structure that that something is. Ulises Carrion

"No mode of creation is more direct or naturally arrived at than the accumulation and agglomeration of materials found close at hand." William C. Seitz

"There are three things which the public will always clamor for, sooner or later: namely, novelty, novelty, novelty." Thomas Hood

"When you sell a man a book you don't just sell him 12 ounces of paper and ink and glue. You sell him a whole new life." Christopher Morley

So... aparently, a book is a lovely volume.
Made up of written and imaged pages,
fastened along one side and encased between two protective covers.

to me the anatomy of a book is quite odd, i never thought all the
key areas of a chunka material and paper could have such interesting
and unsuspecting labels, not to mention the fact there are actualy
different types of books:

Ring bind
Perfect
stapled... so on so forth

But back to the anatomy. Leaves?
the first and last pages of a book.
who would think that they have a name like that eh?

covers, spines, labels, joints, tails, heads, flaps..... ha ;)

im actualy quite interested in this but at the moment the holidays
have killed my confidence so i need to get back on form this week
law resistance! x
